Physical Education
Our physical education program at Franklin Elementary encompasses many skills. We focus on sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect while playing sports and fitness activities. We also focus on encouraging leadership on the field and encouraging all skill levels to work at their potential. Students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades have P.E. class twice per week for a total of 80 minutes with a designated Physical Education teacher. They will have an additional 20 minutes of P.E. with their classroom teacher.
We teach several sports during the year including soccer, flag football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, softball, hockey, and a variety of cooperative games.
All year long we incorporate fitness skills such as the pacer run, the mile run, yoga and flexibility training. We also practice upper body strength activities, along with abdominal strength activities. In the spring, students are assessed on the fitness levels. All intermediate students are tested in the mile run or the pacer run, push-ups, and curl-ups. Fifth graders are additionally tested on shoulder and torso flexibility. The fifth grade test is a state mandated test and the results will be sent to parents or guardians.
Students are required to participate in physical education class unless they have a medical note from a doctor or a parent.
