EGUSD GATE Identification Criteria
Beginning in February 2014, the district established a GATE Planning Committee to provide input in the development and evaluation of equitable identification and selection criteria; staff training to implement equitable identification practices; and effective outreach efforts to students, parents and the community, including students and families from traditionally underrepresented student groups. The recommended criteria were approved in January 2015.
The new GATE identification process will be based on students exhibiting exceptional ability in one of the following areas:
- Creative Ability
- Leadership Ability
- Visual and Performing Arts Ability
- Academic Ability
- Cognitive Ability
The process to begin using the new criteria will include:
- GATE Coordinator training in March
- Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) testing for all current third grade students in April
- School Site GATE committee meeting to review and identify students based on cognitive ability using the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) data in May
- Outreach to families
- Additional staff training during the summer
Implementation of the “new” criteria for identification will continue each school year with:
- School Site GATE committee meeting to review and identify students based on academic ability the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) test results in September
- Continued outreach to families
- School Site GATE committee meeting to review and identify students based on creative ability, leadership ability, and visual and performing arts ability in January
